Project 2: Charitable bequests in Australian wills

Can nudging effectively increase charitable bequests included in Australians’ wills, and if so, which cohorts and what forms are most effective?

Scope: design an experimental study to ascertain avenues to increase Australia’s low rates of charitable bequests using behavioural economics approaches.

This trial design was always highly complex, noting the United Kingdom Behavioural Insights Team ran a similar trial over two years and involved eight will-writing firms.

After extensive stakeholder consultation in both the legal and charity sector, BETA recommended not proceeding to a randomised controlled trial (RCT). Ethical, scope and measurement issues contributed to this recommendation, which the Department of Social Services supported.

BETA produced an Executive Summary report regarding the bequests project as well as content examples for charities on Bequest Trial Intervention Samples.
